IN a bid to encourage cat owners to de-sex their pets, the RSPCA
Peninsula’s Veterinary clinic in Pearcedale is offering to de-sex male
and female cats at heavily discounted rates during the months of July
and August.
RSPCA Victoria has recently announced its participation in the Cat
Crisis Coalition, whereby all major Victorian shelters have jointed
together with the sole aim of achieving mandatory de-sexing of cats, in
order to reduce cat overpopulation and stop the heartbreaking euthanasia
of so many cats each year.
In Victoria alone, shelters receive 48,000 cats and kittens each year,
of which 32,000 are euthanased.
“Many people don’t realise what prolific breeders cats are,” Peninsular
RSPCA Animal Welfare Manager, Colin Pollard said.
“Cats are able to breed from as young as five months old and can have
five to sex litters in a year.
“One adult cat can be responsible for the breeding of literally
thousands of cats over a number of years.
There are large numbers of stray and feral cats on the Mornington
Peninsula and surrounding areas – the life of these cats is harsh, and
they present a huge problem to native wildlife.
“It is no longer acceptable for cats to breed indiscriminately –
de-sexing them must be considered as part of the overall care of all
cats, male and female, by responsible owners.”
Apart from reducing cat numbers, de-sexing is also considered to be of
significant benefit to a cat’s general health and will reduce
anti-social behaviour such as spraying and fighting with other cats.
The clinic is offering to de-sex female cats for $75 and males for $50
during July and August.
